Sobeys is laying off dozens of executives as part of a restructuring plan announced earlier this year.

Dubbed Project Sunrise, Sobeys parent company Empire Co. Ltd. announced in May job cuts would be part of a plan to eliminate $500 million in annual costs by 2020.

And there are more layoffs expected before the end of year, according to Jacquelin Corrado, Sobey’s director of external communications.

Michael Medline, Sobeys president and chief executive officer said in a statement released to the media that while layoffs are not an easy decision, the company “remains committed to making tough decisions and executing the necessary changes to ensure our future success.”

According to a report in The Calgary Herald, the company indicatd it would be reducing the size of regional headquarters across the country to concentrate decision making in one national office.
