Amazon raises Prime monthly rate

Amazon has raised the price of a monthly Amazon Prime membership by $2 to $12.99.

The $99 annual Prime membership is staying the same. Students who were getting monthly Prime access for $5.49 will now pay $6.49.

A Fortune article on the rate hike notes that Amazon introduced the monthly plan in 2016 to give those who couldn’t afford an annual membership the ability to access the program month by month.

Fortune says the move could be a way to get more members to opt for the annual membership, which costs $99, compared to $156 per year for members who pay monthly.
