The Jim Pattison Group (JPG) has acquired U.S. grocery chain The Save Mart Companies.
The business operates 194 stores in eastern and central California (185) and in Nevada (9). The stores operate under three banners – Save Mart (79 stores), Lucky (61 stores) and FoodMaxx (54 stores).
Save Mart was formed in 1952 and employs approximately 13,000 people. Its Save Mart and Lucky banners are full service conventional supermarkets while FoodMaxx is a warehouse-style discount store concept.
The head of Save Mart, executive chairman, Shane Sampson, will report directly to the JPG corporate office in Vancouver, but the Save Mart team will work closely with the Pattison Food Group team to identify and maximize best practice and operating synergies that will benefit Save Mart and Pattison Food Group.
